Overview
What is Aurasma?
Aurasma is an augmented reality tool that allows users to create Auras, which link digital content (or overlays) to objects, images and locations (trigger images). Users can view the digital content by scanning the trigger images with the Aurasma application.
History of Aurasma
Aurasma's history began with a British company called Autonomy. Autonomy was one of the leading producers of image recognition software when it was picked up by Hewlett Packard in 2011. In the early 2000s, Autonomy used the theories of an 18th century mathematician--the Reverend Thomas Bayes-- to create a pattern recognition software. The software used algorithms based on Bayes’ theories that it was possible to calculate the probability of certain objects, people and ideas being associated. Autonomy’s pattern recognition software--IDOL-- did just that, using video and images to calculate the likelihood of a particular action occurring.
With the advent of the iPhone in 2007, image recognition could go mobile, and the idea for Aurasma was born. Autonomy launched Aurasma in 2011, giving consumers and businesses the opportunity to link digital content (including videos, audio and 3-dimensional models) to print or real-life images.
Who Uses Aurasma?
Aurasma has grown in leaps and bounds since its inception, and it seems its uses are limitless! Users of Aurasma include:
